Document Summary
The archaeological record is the sum of all physical evidence about the past that survives to the present. Not all behaviours will leave material traces. Because of intervening cultural and natural processes, the archeological record is not usually a direct reflection of past behaviour. Pompeii, buried by the eruption of the mt. Artifact: any object made or modified by people. Eco fact: natural object used or affected by people. Feature: non- portable material remains resulting from human activity (eg a house, a fireplace and a midden) Archeological site: a place where evidence of past human activity is preserved. Artifact can enter the archeological record at any point in this process. Soil chemistry- can destroy (acid) or preserve (fossilize) Changes the context of materials within the archeological site. As a result of these natural and cultural factors the archeological record is highly distorted! = the provenience and association of an artifact, feature or archeological find in space an time.
