Ast101 lecture 3: solar system tour: solar system- consists of star orbited by planets, moons & lots of debris (asteroids, comets, dust) Jovian = jupiter- like: jovian planet- large, liquid +gas, small rocky core, many moons, made of light elements, traditionally (cid:272)alled (cid:862)gas giants(cid:863) : jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune: larger than terrestrial planets, planets in outer solar system made of lighter elements compared to planets in inner s. s. Mercury: no atmosphere, highly cratered surface, rocky exterior w/ huge iron core, temp ranges from -170c (anti-sun facing side) & 425c (sun facing side) [lead melts @ 327c: no moons, only 2 probes have been sent, mariner 10 (1974-1975, messenger (2011-2015) Earth: wet planet, unusually big moon, surface & atmosphere heavily modified by life. Mars: very thin co2 atmosphere, many huge, extinct volcanoes, probably warmer & wetter in past, many surface features probably carved by h2o, sub-surface h2o, no life known to date, tilted*, canyon- valles marineris, volcano- olympus mons.
