What is a species? (cid:862)the spe(cid:272)ies pro(cid:271)le(cid:373)(cid:863) involves problem of how best to define a species. There are many species concepts: taxonomic, phonetic, genetic, ecological, phylogenetic, biological, recognition, cohesion, darwinian, evolutionary, when people recreate species concepts, they basically repeat thee two bolded ones. Concepts vary among different groups of organisms no universal species concept. Biological species concept ernst mayr (cid:862)a group of i(cid:374)ter(cid:271)reedi(cid:374)g (cid:374)atural populatio(cid:374)s that are reprodu(cid:272)ti(cid:448)ely isolated fro(cid:373) other su(cid:272)h group(cid:863) First formally defined the biological species concept, but dobzhansky first suggested the idea. Sympatric together: there should be gene flow happening. Finding a compatible mate: habitat can contribute to it, mating & fertilization, development of zygote, adult growth & survival, reproductive & fertility of offspring.
