Adaptive evolution: result of interaction between organisms trying to make a success in a challenging environment. Science of ecology: science of distribution and abundance of organisms. The world is patchy in any special scale. The light tan in middle east+ sahara: not enough water to support green vegetation. Europe/ south east asia: green all patchiness. Parts of the world will not support the same animals; they will have characteristic assemblages that are different. Forested green areas these are coniferous forests pine/spruce and fur. Sage brush scrub browner and flatter stuff matter of elevation: higher rigidness"s get more water. Green + brown are different habitats as if the white stuff: snow. Mosaic of patches of aspen forest and open meadows. Desert habitat you don"t see anything like this most times of the year.
