Document Summary
Last time, we discussed plant ecology, particularly the static aspects of plant ecology traditional approach. This lead to a whole taxonomy of community types. One goes out, locates stands, and tabulates the numbers of species, etc. We talked about whether the types are discrete entities or if vegetation varies continuously. We didn"t talk about the dynamic aspects of plant community ecology that changes through time, almost instantaneously. We want to talk about this ecological succession, primarily in plants, but animals will change accordingly. Community dynamics: predictable successional change in plant communities. Pioneer species get in first (from dispersal or seed bank in soil) Soil-building processes and shade thought to be critical. Happens at many levels, but most heavily studied in human-impacted landscapes in eastern north. Vegetation changes spontaneously as the vegetation itself modifies the environment. Goes through temporary, non-equilibrium stages: r-strategists are pushed out and replaced by k-strategists who are better competitors for light and water.
