Document Summary

Tend to be slightly acidic, moderately leached, brown in colour due to abundant organic matter. Deciduous trees and vegetation includes a layer of smaller trees and shrubs and herbaceous plants. Exceed evaporation & transpiration water moves downward through soils and drain from landscape as groundwater and surface streams and river. Na where continental climate zones have rainfall between 30- 25-50 cm/year and winters are cold and summers hot. Rich in organic matter, low in acidity, heavily leached and tend to be rich in nutrients. S hemisphere larger ratio of ocean surface to land moderates winter temp, prevents frost. Mild winters, heavy winter rains and summer fog create conditions that support extremely tall evergreens. Warmer and drier parts of biome, especially where soils are sandy and nutrient poor develop pine forest. Fire is dominant influence in the summer and species have fire resistant underground stems (rhizomes) where shoots resprout or fire- resistant seeds.
