Document Summary

Bio230 lecture 5 - regulation of the transcriptome (sept 21) After rna molecule transcribed, needs to be processed before cell can use it. Fingerprint of gene expression (transcriptome) used for drug development. Transcriptome = entire set of transcripts possesed by tissue/cell type. I. e. if sequenced all the rna in a cell type/tissue, would get transcriptome. Fingerprint (signature) of gene expression b/c different cell types express different genes and express genes at different levels. = every cell type has different set of rna molecules that define it. Applies to healthy cells, and diseased cells. Ex: can compare healthy liver tissue to cancerous liver tissue b/c each will have different rna expressed. Rna molecule contributes to features of cell type. See how each gene expressed at transcript level by hybridizing. Take all the rna molecules and put it on microarray. Determine intensity/abundance of each rna molecule corresponding to each gene. Different patterns of transcript/rna expression in different cell types.
