Dark age society seems to have consisted of chiefs (sing. Poleis seem to be aggregaions of smaller communiies. Sparta, eg. was formed from four small communiies pitana, mesoa, knosoura and limnai. Aristocracies in poleis probably emerged from union of basileis and families, or from some basileis and their families taking precedence over others. Sparta is a special case since it has two kings. Possibly because both kings came from one of the four small communiies. Terms used for aristocracy: kalos (beauiful), agathos (good), estholos (noble/brave), eugenes (well-born) Terms used for non-aristocrats: kakos(bad/ugly), deilos (cowardly) Among rams and asses and horses, kyrnos, we look for those of noble breeding and a man wants them to mate from worthy stock.
