It is a trap: zeus arranged her marriage with hades, it is typical for the father to arrange the marriage. Demeter had no say: persephone picks the flower and the earth opens up. Hades pops up and snatches her: demeter hears her daughter drying but does not know what is happening, she goes into mourning in trying to find her daughter. She doesn"t eat the food of the gods and searches for nine days: hecate heard what happened but didn"t see. Helios, however did: demeter goes to helios and he tells her what happened.
