Document Summary
In the odyssey we see something unusual in that penelope has kleos for being such a faithful wife. In homer"s life, both seafaring and encountering different people was relatively new, and we see this reflected in his works. It takes odysseus the longest to get home: the lotuses are magic. They taste so good that they give you forgetfulness if you eat them: odysseus eats some and forgets the importance of going home. Odysseus and his men come to the place of the cyclopes. They are shepherds even though they are monsters: they stand for the noble barbarian who hasn"t yet been touched by civilization, the men end up in a particular cyclops" cave, polyphemus. Polyphemus is a giant, so odysseus and his men are too small to open the cave door: polyphemus starts eating odysseus" men. Instead of killing him, they get polyphemus drunk. could drink wine and not get drunk: odysseus and his men blind polyphemus.
