Homeric question - homer believed to have lived during archaic period, but talks about war after this period and so is now believed to have been more than 1 person. Illiad talks about part of trojanwar - greek roman. Main argument between two heroes - achilles + agamemnon, plus after math. Nothing on start, cause or end of war. Happens in medias res - in the middle of things. Starts with wedding of peleus (mortal) to thetis (nymph/minor god) All gods at the wedding other than eris. Eris arrives, brings golden apple which says "pallistae" - for the prettiest. Hera, athena, aphrodite all claim apple, zeus refuses to decide, it is now up to paris. Hera bribes him with power, athena with wisdom and becoming an effective warrior, aphrodite with a beautiful woman. He goes with aphrodite, is awarded helen of sparta, now helen of troy.
