Actually holds an auction to raise didius julianus to the throne (he was the highest bidder) Does not last long- people do not like this type of election for emperors. He is aware of the problems presented by the praetorian guard. Disbands praetorians and replaces them with chosen, loyal veterans from his legions. Says the praetorians cannot come within 100 miles of rome. Engages in campaigns against parthians and in britain where he eventually dies. He is from north africa - roman. italian on his mother"s side, and libyan/punic on his father"s side. Very diff from past emperors who were purely of roman/italian origin. Severus" sons appointed joint emperors by the senate after severus" death.
