CSB328H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Wnt Signaling Pathway, Blastoderm, Somatic Cell
Document Summary
Our body has different axes: dorsal-ventral, anterior-posterior (head-tail) Polarity (head on one end, tail on the other end) Animal has to figure out how to generate the anterior-posterior polarity (where to put the head and tail: needs to define the difference body domains so that they develop differently form each other. 3 major body domains in a particular order: head, trunk, tail. Regional specification: making different parts of the body look different from each other and having them in a particular order. Drosophila melanogaster: genetic model system for developmental biology: larvae are headless maggots that eat rotten fruit, very small, larvae is important for understanding of mechanisms that drive development, wnt signaling and hedgehog signalling was discovered through drosophila. Thorax has 3 segments and abdomen has 8 segments: head does not look segmented, but its actually made out of segments, larva. Looks simpler, but is already divided into segments and has clear head, thorax, and abdomen boundaries.
