Document Summary

Take home message: gradient of retinoic acid and the cells respond to different concentrations of retinoic acid. Wnt signalling and retinoic acid combined will give different information to different cells along the axis. Along with rostral and dorsal signalling you also get counter gradients of signalling in the anterior to posterior axis. Fgf8 is highlighted by in situ hybridization and so is wnt3a and you cannot tell them apart in the posterior end of the embryo. Retinoic acid (vitamins a) is very important for neurogenesis and you look at the enzyme that makes retinoic acid. You can see that a retinoic gradient is made counter to the gradient of fgf8. Where the two gradients fails to completely bridge, you get activation of the expression of mesp2. Mesp2 is the transcription factor that is important for eph expression which sets the stage for where an epithelial somite will be born.
