Police legitimacy: derive from general public (common law model); judgments that ordinary citizens make about the rightness of police conduct and the organizations that employ and supervise them. Policing by consent: police want the cooperation and support of the public when they are conducting their legal duties. Pledge system: every person was responsible for assisting neighbors and protecting the village from thieves and other criminals. Tithings: group of 10 families; hundred: 10 tithings. Constable: first real police officer, dealt with the most serious law violations. Corner: make sure the interests of crown were upheld, including criminal matters: corner"s inquest: able to conduct preliminary hearings. Constable-watch system: by statute of westminster; protect the property of people in larger. Watchman: appointed by constable; watching and guarding the local town and city. Hue and cry": male who between 15-60 assist a watchman when needed. Shire-reeves were replaced by justices of the peace: control an entire country; assigned with judicial functions. (1326)
