47 views2 pages

Document Summary

The york cycle of mystery plays is one of the great literary and theatrical monuments of the later middle ages in england. It was quite an undertaking for the city: 300 speaking parts, nancially challenging. Used for religious purposes to glorify god, but also for prestige, to make the city look better. Corpus christi was a movable feast (like mlmh)= celebrated the real presence of the body of christ in the host. The feast and the cycle are not directly connected. The york cycle was about the fall + redemption of man + various stories of the bible. Ex: the deception by the devil = the fall from heaven + the redemption through the incarnation, passion and resurrection of chris t. Because of there long sequences they separated the cycle into pageants + were given to craft-guilds which provided script (of unknown writers) and created oats/ stages for the pageant to be performed on.
