Document Summary

Internal validity: empirical result: mixed gender competition means men perform better with no change in, preferred explanation: competition induced stereotype threat female performance. However, when comparing results from piece rate with random pay, no difference in performance of women: introducing risk does not affect women, women don"t respond to competition. Differences in "trophy effect: evolutionary explanations, men have higher intrinsic joy of winning regardless of payoff, women don"t like to compete, women are already performing at maximum. Women socialized to see being competitive as bad. No increased performance from increased effort/unable to increase effort any more. Alternatively, women don"t like to compete against males. However, women did better in single sex tournament than piece rate tournament. However, performance of women in single sex piece rate was approximately same as mixed piece rate. External validity: nuisance variables will affect whether effects observed in study will be seen in alternative environments.
