Document Summary

Ess105 lecture 1: general concepts in earth science. Light blue: continental shell, continent extend beneath water, shallow. Iron mines in old rocks, record change in earth"s early atmosphere. Copper mines much younger, related to mountain building in west. Boundary between brown and blue is current shoreline. Shallow sea oor around land is continental shelf; outer edge of shelf is edge of continent. Some parts of sea oor are simple, others are complex = different histories. Ice age: extended area covered in ice sheets. Deepest layer - iron-nickel core (molten outer core; solid inner) Uppermost part: lithosphere - stronger portion of mantle. Regions with continental crust are higher than oceanic crust. Regions with thick crust higher than thin crust. Thick blocks are higher than thin blocks. Dense materials (like more dense wood) are lower. Affected by both thickness and density of crust. Rocks formed in normal surface environments: sedimentary rock.
