Document Summary
Lecture 3: neoclassicism and revolutionary politics - beginning of the 19th century. In this lecture we look at pictures that are a result of the enlightenment. Questinoing of orthodox beliefes about monarchy and religion, including structural and inequality in society. Skepticism of social structure, idea that there is some natural order in which aristocrats and elites rule over, these structures are man made not by god. Idea that every individual has a common einterset in this common concern. The hierarchies with which europe was ruled may be deeply problematic. Egalitaric proposes that there is a shared society in which all people have say; very different from private concern which we see in so many of boucher"s and others paintings which is just about private pleasure. These are ideals gathered and ultimately will be the basis of the revolution. Complexities of art in the moment of transition before the revolution.
