GGR305H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Sea Level Rise, Ocean Acidification, Scleractinia
Document Summary
Effects of cc on biodiversity: ocean stressors, range shift. Climate warming comes from molecules we release that are captured in soil of earth: co2, nox, methane, ozone, cfc"s. Molecules all let sunlight through but don"t let heat out. Global energy budget is backed up with more storage in radiation: co2 doesn"t have powerful effect in trapping heat, but produced in large quantity. Deforestation: release carbon trapped in trees. Soil destruction: contain large quantities of carbon (even more than is contained in above ground biomass, much of carbon in atmosphere was released b/c bad soil management. Diagram: sectors responsible for bulk of fossil fuel emissions. Southern hemisphere is not as heavily industrialized as northern hemisphere. Extreme weather events: more energy in atmosphere to fuel hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms. Glacier melt translates into sea level rise. Lose large area of shoreline for every meter of vertical rise. Just from thermal expansion of sea water, expect particular amount of rise.
