Astronomy believed that earth was center of universe. Some basic theorems follow immediately from definitions. Other theorems follow from definitions and basic theorems. The definition of 2 = 1 + 1. Intuitive answer: it must be somehow based on experience our observations and experiments. If we see three swans that are white, we generalize the results of our observations and conclude that all swans are white. For the mathematical example, you did not need any observations or experience. Our theory that all swans are white is based on your experience (observations and experiments) of white swans. Always a force of attraction between two objects which is proportional to the product of the masses of the objects and inversely proportional to the square of the distance. This force is greater when masses are greater. Either this is similar to case of math, where you can deduce this from definitions.
