HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Scientific Method, Bed Sheet, Phlogiston Theory
Document Summary
There were ancient greeks who studied the concepts of the world, but unfortunately, they had everything wrong (or most of the things wrong). Plato, for example, thought everything was made out of small triangles, while aristotle thought earth was the centre of the universe. It can be concluded, there was no science, but there was lots of religion. However, christians came along with the creationism theory about how god created everything; all living things and earth. Galileo was the first scientist who stood up against these churchmen, but was punished as a result. That did not stop him though; with the help of other scientists (including newton), science was finally liberated from religion, using scientific theories/methods. The scientific method set the boundaries or limits of (demarcates) science from all that pseudoscience (a collection of beliefs or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on scientific method) and ensures that science is rational enterprise.
