Became accepted at the end of the 17th century. Descartes realized that in order to convince the community at the time (aristotelian medieval method) it must seem intuitively true. Descartes believed in order to make sure that i only accept what is true, i have to start by doubting everything . Erase all theories, experience, existence of the external world, even own existence. The principal attribute of mind is thought (can"t think of something without thought) i can"t conceive of a material object that doesn"t occupy some space therefore the principle attribute of matter is extension. Dualism there are 2 substances- extended (matter) and thinking (mind) Mechanisms material objects are composed of bits of interacting matter; replaced. Aristotle"s hylomorphism every compound can be analytically decomposed into its form and matter.
