HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Blind Experiment, Scientific Method, Formal Science
Document Summary
There is no such thing as an absolute scientific method. There is no universal and fixed method of science. The placebo effect is when the patient"s improvement is because of the idea of the medicine they take. Single blind study- two groups are given pills, one is a placebo. Double blind study- to rid of experimenters bias where the testers unconsciously influence the patient"s. We have changes in methods that are results of changes in theory. The hypothetical deductive method is based on complexity which is that the world as it appears is observation is a product of a mechanism. Post hoc explanations are the idea that anything is possible after the fact. Any explanation can be given that are all equally precise. A hypothesis must predict something that has not yet been observed. Since principles are changeable, the hdm works to change with this.
