Document Summary
Summary of week 3: aquinas and natural law: merges two senses of law. In one meaning, we"re talking about scientiic laws, like the law of gravity. In the other meaning, we talk about the kind of laws that get legislated by a parliament or some other body that has the power to make laws. Nobody has the power to make a scientiic law. A legislative law says you ought to do certain things, scientiic laws simply tell you what happens as a matter of fact, doesn"t tell you what to do. Nobody can violate the law of gravity in the same sense one could say one violated a legislative law. In the former, you"d just say that you found the counterexample to the law of gravity. There is by nature one natural end of sex, but that natural end has to be enforced. It is not merely natural, but backed by god"s command.
