POL208Y1 Lecture 13: Lecture 13- Bureaucratic Politics and the Cubin Missile Crisis Part 2
Document Summary
Lecture 13 (jan 8): bureaucratic politics and the cubin missile crisis part 2. Irving janis deliberately chose this term as to evoke george orwell"s 1984. Groupthink is a subtle but powerful form of peer pressure that afects decision makers and results in bad decision being made. The bay of pigs crisis (bopc) was a perfect failure because it embodied all the characterisics of group think. We have gone through the history of the crisis in last lecture. Janis looked at the oicial explanaion of what went wrong; they were incomplete. Janis doesn"t reject the oicial explanaions of why the bopc failed but he believes that they are incomplete. Group think can help ill in some gaps and explain the crisis. The main thing that causes bad decision, when a group is sufering from group think is conformity. People don"t realize that they are conforming to the rest of the group.
