Ideology
• Freedom of thought and expression, before the French revolution you could not
speak out, this was the greatest resolution
o Using reason was the best guarantee of liberty
• We could develop the science of ideas
• A body of ideas that reflects the social needs and separations of an individual
group or culture
• Ideology expresses the most fundamental ideas about the nature of the individual
the nature of society and the nature of the relationship of the individual and
society

Ideology is normative: they deal with values, e. g. conservative stands for something different form liberalism, offers a view on how government is, how it should be organized, deals with underlying philosophical questions. Canadian parties: classify by, experts, mp"s values, mp"s socio-economic status, education, occupation. Income: higher values in this are associated with the right, voter support, party finances, voters perceptions, party activist perceptions, party constitutions. Man is perfectible: equality, all rights should be equal, religion is a personal choice, achievement not inscription, individual priority, prioritize the individual, the sum of all individuals, competition. Not just achievement of the individual but the community: community priority, co-operation. Conceptions of the good society: conservative, there is an obligation to help those lower on the social ladder and society is based on dependence.
