Cells receive oxygen and nutrients from bloodstream. Internal environment: fluid that surrounds the cells that exchange materials with blood. The exchange of materials between the external and internal environment. Lungs, gi tract and kidneys exchange materials from blood and external environment. Inspiration: where oxygen enters the bloodstream from the air in the lungs. Expiration: carbon dioxide exits the bloodstream into the air. Gi tract: water, nutrients, inorganic salts obtained from food are transported from lumen. Secretion: stomach uses blood to produce acids and proteins that are transported to the lumen to aid in digestion. Filtration: in kidneys, fluid from bloodstream enters tubules. Reabsorption: fluid travels the tubules and needed materials are transported back into bloodstream. Excretion: fluid that reaches end of tubules (urine) which gets eliminated out of the body. Tbw (total body water): total fluid volume in body 42l. Plasma: fluid found in blood (non-cellular part) 3l.
