Internal respiration: use of oxygen within mitochondria to generate atp by oxidative phosphorylation and the production of carbon dioxide as a waste product. External respiration: exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and body tissues involving both the respiratory and circulatory systems. Upper airways, respiratory tract and structures of the thoracic cavity. The major organs of the respiratory system are the lungs are located in the thoracic cavity- each lung is divided into lobes. The right lung has 3 lobes and the left lung has 2 lobes. Air passages in the head and neck.
