Lecture 1 the respiratory system and breathing. Attached to the ribs and closes the entire thoracic cage. Goes down when it contracts to expand the volume of the thorax: there are also accessory inspiratory muscles. Upper airway muscles opening: allow airways. Scalenes: a number of small muscles involved in the expansion of the ribcage v expiratory muscles. Psl301 human physiology ii: allow for the contraction of the thoracic cage to squeeze the lungs to let air out, include the abdominal muscles and internal intercostals. These muscles contract and move abdominal organs against the diaphragm to reduce the volume of the lungs. Other behaviours using respiratory muscles v sighing v gasping v locomotion v aspiration v vocalization v whistling v blowing v there are many different behaviours that are produced with the respiratory muscles: there are different breathing behaviours. Vocalization v able to do multiple activities with the same set of muscles.
