Attention: there is a lot of information entering the brain at any given moment so it"s necessary for the brain to prioritize some information for immediate processing. *bottom-up processing your brain takes in the information as it comes in. Active attention: when attention is directed by goals and top-down processing: e. g. , searching a messy table for keys. Selective attention: occurs when you attend to one source of information while simultaneously ignoring the other stimuli. Divided attention (or multitasking): is when we simultaneously attend to two (or more) tasks at the same time: talking to friend whilst driving. Inhibition: holding your attention in one location while your brain is actively blocking the processing of other parts of the scene. Fatal familial insomnia: a rare hereditary disease affecting the thalamus, that causes individuals to die from lack of sleep. Electroencephalograms (eegs): measure activity across the surface of the brain.
