Document Summary

Plan a: physical constitutive barriers to block infection. If plan a unsuccessful, then invading micronlorganism causes infection, but can destroy invaders using components of innate immunity: humoral: complement, coagulation system, cytokines, cellular: epithelial cells, neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, natural killer cells, eosinophils. With initiation and stimulation of innate immune system, the adaptive immune system gets activated (b cells, t cells, ab"s respond and help protect against subsequent infections) Skin and mucosal surfaces: sites of microbial encounters. Barrier defense mechanisms are constitutive: they exist prior to pathogen exposure and run on their own. 3 types of anatomical barriers: mechanical. Skin: cell type is squamous epithelium (several layers), which provides a physical barrier with tight junctions, as well as desquamation process with dry skin flaking off, shedding bacteria with it. Can also be ciliated epithelium (respiratory tract), where the cilia can beat upwards and all at the same time, particles/pathogens get moved up respiratory tract and coughed out of mouth (mucociliary escalator).
