Involves unwarranted suspiciousness, hypersensitivity, and reluctance to trust others because expect to be exploited or maltreated. Tend to be rigid in their thinking and preoccupied with unfounded beliefs, stubborn and quarrelsome. Can create self-fulfilling prophecies increasing resistance of beliefs to change. Must be careful to clarify origins of wariness or suspicion. May result from projection vs. filtering information through untrusting mental schema. Psychotherapy focuses on reducing paranoia so to improve functioning. Pervasive detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotion. History of social isolation, seeking solitary activities, emotional coldness, and indifference to others and close relationships. Show social deficiencies common to other cluster a disorders (more extreme), but not the unusual thought processes. Psychotherapy focuses on teaching value of social relationships, empathy and social skills.
