Document Summary

Specificity coding: 1 neuron represents 1 specific idea: research shows that it"s not true when thinking about complex ideas, it is true, however, for processing simple features (1 neuron processes diagonal lines, 1 neuron for vertical lines) Sparse coding: specific pattern of neuron firing encodes a thought: the specific pattern of neurons that fire = mental representation of that object/idea/person. Population coding: all neurons are firing, but to different extents. First, we need to know about brain structures. Cortical regions: the cortex- responsible for higher-function cognitive processes. Subcortical regions: all other parts of the brain. Laterlization: each half of the brain has affinity fo rcertain types of processing. Right hemisphere: processes information holistically, characteristics- creativity, emotional understanding, language, art. Left hemisphere: processes informaiton analytically, characteristics- problem solving, math, logic, reasoning. Corpus collosum: the brains structure that connects the 2 brain hemispheres: lots of crosstalk, limbs are controlled by the opposite brain hemisphere.
