Long-term memory: anything that is not within conscious thought, that you can remember for more than 20 seconds. Shown through double dissociation b/w hm & clive wearing, and kf. Impaired stm: average digit span around 5-9, he could only remember 1 (and sometimes 2) Functioning ltm- could remember, and form new long-term memories. Until you die, and depends on the memory. Cramming information for school- limited: remembering lines from your favourite show limitless. The memories we remember are ones that brought us the most joy, or the ones that were most painful. Results: people are equally likely to choose options that convey the same meaning (ie a and c) Demonstrates that people remembered meaning, but not exactly the word choice. Semantics is the major code in memory. Effect: participants hear random list of words, every word exists in a different category- eliminates interference. & chunking: free recall, asked participants to recall any and all words they remembered.
