Macular degeneration: degeneration of the macula , which is the central part of your retina. It"s quite common, it can lead to blindness. Central vision is lost, there is a blind spot in the center of your vision. Caused by formation of new veins or thinning of tissue. Path of image processing from eye to brain: eyeball, photoreceptors, bipolar cells, retinal ganglion cells, lateral geniculate nucleus, striate cortex. Visual acuity: smallest spatial detail that can be resolved. The strokes are 1/5th of the letter size. The top number is the distance at which patient can just identify the letters, the bottom is the distance at which a person with normal vision can just identify the letters. 20/20 vision means you can see like most people, you have normal vision.
