Now selection is cutting off the ends of the distribution. Human beings selecting for miniature and very large horses: large horses would not survive because they required too much. Don"t reproduce: smaller horses cannot defend themselves against predators. Don"t reproduce: medium horses are perfect. Will make the variation in the population less, produce generations where the variability in the population will get smaller. Makes that average value very stable and there is not much variation. Prickly pear cactus: tourists would dig them up and take them home as souvenirs, they vary in the amount of spines they produce. Humans intentionally selecting for something: ex. Form of genetic modification: selectively breed. Humans intentionally deciding who gets to breed, who gets to survive. Very relevant in terms of patterns of biodiversity. Not restricted to islands, but often happens when new islands form. Niche: role you play ecologically, ex. Do you eat seeds, fruit, where do you nest, etc.
