Integral part of the history of reading. Printed marginalia/gloss comes from the producer of the text. Proliferation of books & decreased price of books more ppl writing in their books. Advising students to read w/ a pen in hand and write in the margins to memorize things better. Could combine both notebook & book in one, b/c paper was expensive so it was useful to write in your books. By the 1700s, marginalia become more personal & begin to be used to reflect the readers/owner"s feelings & thoughts about the texts. Marginalia became a genre of literary production.
