Public libraries brought readership to towns and neighborhoods. Changed how books were available (typesetting, design, layout, printing tech developed rapidly) Demand drives supply, crucial ot this is literacy (this was made significant with educational changes) In the west, better quality of education for longer period of time was mandated, exposure to more and more substantial texts, opening public schools. Public library movement in 19th century, allowing newly educated to have access to books, developing reading habits. Newspapers, magazines, journals that arrived at set intervals, circulating news, fashion, scientific developments. Carved out sub-groups in target audiences, special interest content. Miscellany: variety of different kinds of articles, letter, entertainment, jokes, news - safe reading for all members of the family.
