Document Summary
Art no longer has anything to do with the object, no longer serves the state/ religion. It can exist in and for itself. In contrast to abstract expressionism, minimalists were inspired by composers like john cage. Famous composition 4 minutes 33 seconds premiered in 1952, when david tudor sat in front of a piano and did nothing. Proposed that primary act of musical performance was not in making music, but in listening. Minimalism counts on the viewer to complete the work of art/piece of musique. Technically not a minimalism, but her early work inspired the definers of the visual art minimalist movement. Now resides in mental institution in tokyo where she has her studio. Consciously shifting away from self-absorbed gestures of the abstract expressionists. Methodically applies black paint to unstretched canvases, covers the surface with hand- painted, deliberately uneven and tiny arcs. Originality is not necessary (in contrast to ab ex belief/goal in originality, being unique)
