• Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” argument
• Competing perspectives argue that this misunderstands what culture is, the
process and impact of globalization, and the role of the west in the world.
• Thought world woulf be defined about cultural conflict
Landscape (POWER+COMMUNITY)
• Places or kinds of places that become symbolic or iconic and represent larger
cultural ideals, beliefs, and practices.
• “Read the Landscape lie a text”
• Nations as “imagined communities”
Landscape’s Functions
• Expresses who has social power
• Marks off historical events and change
• Challenges existing power relations at different scales
• Tells the story of community to a larger external audience
Neue Wache Berlin
• Memorial that has had many functions,
• Means “New Watch house”, in the heart of berlin
• During cold war it was a watch house for guards because of its location, also
where soldiers stored weapons.
• After WW1 it became a memorial to German soldiers who died in WW1.
• After WW2 (when berlin was divided) it was turned into a monument for those
who died in WW2 in the hand of the Nazis. Located on the east side of berlin
• After cold war ended, it became a new war memorial, inside has a statue of a
woman holding her dead child with the inscription in front saying “to the victims
of tyranny and war”. Open roof above it so if it rains it rains on the statue as well.
