Document Summary

Know and understand the basic functions of the nervous system and the divisions responsible for these functions. Know the anatomical parts of the neuron, the different types of neurons and support cells in the nervous system, and their functions. The nervous system has 3 general functions: sensory input: information gathered by sensory receptors. Integration: the decision or processing of information by the brain or spinal cord: motor output: the response. Reflex arcs: these are sensory pathways which do not travel to the brain (i. e. the interneuron is the spinal cord only): reflex arcs are fast and important for survival. The central nervous system (cns) is the integration & command centre, including the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (pns) is the communication lines between the cns and the rest of the body: these include the cranial and spinal nerves, and ganglia (cell bodies of the pns).
