Odor molecules enter the nose and are detected by specialized olfactory epithelium present at the top of the nasal cavity. These specialized olfactory epithelia are connected to olfactory nerve endings, which unit to form the olfactory nerve. The olfactory nerve process through holes/termina of the foramina of the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, and unite with the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb connects to the olfactory tract, which transmits signals directly to the olfactory cortex. The optic ganglion from the retina connects to the optic nerve, passes through the optic canal of the sphenoid bone and crosses over at the optic chiasm. The nerve continues as the optic tract after crossing over.
