Anth 2246 week 3: ong orality and literacy. Preponderance of oral aspect, written for is secondary. It has been obscured by our attention to written forms. Study of language and literature has focused on written texts. Oral literature as an oxymoron, preliterate as biased. Literacy as necessary for further development of human beings. Primary orality can only be imperfectly reconstructed. Languages cannot exist without orality, but they can exist without writing. Chapter 2 the modern discovery of primarily oral cultures. Counters the idea that any highly developed verbal art had to be written and how these assumptions about the iliad and odyssey were dismantled. Shows that many characteristics of these poems are truly mnemonic devices that aid in its recitation, memorization and (re)creation.
