Anthropology lecture term 2 week 2: distinguish human language from other communication systems in terms of design features, explain how language works as a system of signs in combination with other symbol systems. Language: all animals and insects communicate, only humans have language, communication systems, signals have fixed, regular meaning (the meaning is always the same, messages have a purpose, ex. Interchangeability =sender and receiver of message are interchangeable: taking turns speaking and listening, animals can"t do this, arbitrariness =nothing motivated about the sound. 2: next 2 are not hockett"s, metaphor =allows for thinking in more abstract ways, multilingualism =idea that we can learn more than one language. 3: quality =having a creaky voice, breathy, pitch, most of these are not taught, they are picked up, how is meaning co-constructed through language, co-construction of meaning. Idea that the listener helps add to the meaning.
