Determine what is (cid:498)normal(cid:499) so we can fix the (cid:498)abnormal(cid:499) Ultimate goal: to understand how macromolecular systems and organelles work and cooperate to enable cells to function autonomously and in tissues. To understand how a cell performs its function, need to be able to look at cells: look inside cells through microscopy. Isolate cells from tissues and culture them in-vitro (in artificial environment) Once you have the tools, we can start to ask, and more importantly begin to answer, biological questions pertaining to our ~ 75 trillion cells. Cell culture is the technique used to grow cells or tissues outside the organism under strictly controlled conditions: grows in an artificial environment. Cells are isolated from any tissue by breaking down the cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions (use mechanical fragmentation, trypsin, edta: edta: binds calcium and magnesium. Important for helping proteins that help the cell stick together. Sticky-type protein unfolds and doesn"t allow cells to be stick together.
