Document Summary

Compeiion: an interacion between individuals in which each is harmed by their shared use of a limiing resource. Compeiion occurs between species that share the use of a resource that limits the growth, survival, or reproducion of each species. Interspeciic compeiion: interacion between two species in which each is harmed when they both use the same limiing resource. Intraspeciic compeiion: between individuals of a single species. Resources are features of the environment required for growth, survival, or reproducion, and which can be consumed to the point of depleion. Light for plants: water in terrestrial habitats. For mobile animals, space for refuge, nesing, etc. Species are also inluenced by physical factors (abioic) that are not consumed, such as temperature, ph, salinity. Experiments with two diatom (algae) species showed that when each species was grown alone, a stable populaion size was reached. When grown together, they competed for silica, and one species drove the other to exincion.
