Recall: mutations can be classi ed: based on origin spontaneous vs induced, based on molecular change base substitution, insertion, deletion , based on the effect on translation, based on the effect on function. Types of mutations - located in the exons. Translation & function: ex: a nonsense mutation could remove amino acids needed for a negative regulation,resulting in a hypermorphic allele, the protein could work all the time, just not under proper conditions (1) silent mutation. A nucleotide change that alter a codon into a mutant codon, but speci es exactly the same amino acid. Wobble hypothesis: amino acids are encoded by 1 - 6 codons. A change in the 3rd position could still code for the same protein the majority of silent mutations change the 3rd nucleotide of the codon position at which most codons for the same amino acid differs.
