Transgenics: the process of transferring a speci c sequence of dna into organisms, very species speci c. Model organisms: model organisms must be able to be maintained & manipulated to test a certain aspect of biology. Common characteristics: easy to maintain under laboratory & controlled conditions. Often grown in incubators (controlled conditions) must be small in size to be able to be grown in incubators: easy induction, recognition & tracking of mutations. Need to be able to modify & manipulate it to the scientists" advantages. Need to induce mutations that result in obvious, morphological changes or genetic changes that are easily observed: easy to produce a large number of offspring in a short period of time. Short generation time preferred (ex: you wouldn"t use elephants as a model organism = long generation time: have a large amount of data shared amongst scientists.
