Document Summary

Top shows mbt with gsc on dorsal and bmp on ventral secreted to all ectoderm. Thus all ectoderm turns into epidermis unless bmp is inhibited. Inject more bmp in early embryo = do molecules get overwhelmed = no do. Rmr do molecule makes mesoderm and inhibits bmp. But with too much bmp, all do molecules so busy blocking bmps that they fail to make dorsal axis ventralized embryo with all epidermis. Bottom shows injection of dominant negative bmp4 receptor. Dominant negative receptor = receptor that does not function and also overrides endogenous receptors. Non-functional bmp receptor = no bmp = no epidermis. Also for some reason gsc expression increases dorsalized embryo with two dorsal axes. Same effect when too much do molecules (nodal, follistatin and chordin) added. Too much bmp binding = too much bmp inhibition = no epidermis. Do molecules involved in not just activation (mesoderm) but also inhibition (epidermis) Bmp makes epidermis by turning on specific genes.
